Night Sky Learning Center

There is a need for high quality experiential science education programs for youth in southern Arizona. Arizona youth lag behind their national counterparts, with just 33% of 4th graders and 25% of 8th graders scoring at or above the proficient level in science. Children need opportunities to see that they can accomplish great things – that they, too, can be scientists. That’s the power and promise of what we do.

The newly expanded Chiricahua Astronomy Complex will offer a more robust science education curriculum, with year-round weekend activities, extended outings, and the addition of an Astronomy Camp for youth.   We call this expansion our Night Sky Learning Center. The center is located on the north eastern portion of the Master Site Plan.

Supported by amateur and professional astronomer members, participants spend one or several nights learning the science of astronomy using some of the largest, privately-owned telescopes in North America, as well as several telescopes which will allow hands-on observing by participants. This high-quality, year-round educational programming offers critical building blocks that spur youths’ future interest in STEM education and careers.

There are 10 sleeping rooms, a classroom, light kitchen facilities and handicap accessible bathrooms in the complex.

With the help of generous donations from TAAA members and Foundations in our Southwest Arizona community supporting our Gateway to the Galaxy Capital Campaign, this vision is being realized.

The Night Sky Learning Center at CAC broke ground in 2020 .  Clearing, foundations, and erection of the buildings proceeded throughout the pandemic and into the year 2023.  The Stinger Pad, which has thee and will soon have four telescopes mounted for members’ and visitors’ use.

The Night Sky Learning Center is available to members for their enjoyment and to support observing and researching late into the night. We also host the TAAA Astronomy CAMP that makes use of the dark skies and excellent facilities to bring the joy of the study of the night skies to the youth and public in our community.
