DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm – Main Presentation\nTITLE:  Looking For Life: From Icy Comet Belts to the Habitable Zone\nPRESENTATION:  One of the main goals of astronomical sciences is to unravel whether we are alone in the Universe. In the next decade\, exoplanetary science will focus on developing the technology for direct observation of exoplanets orbiting in the so-called Habitable Zone (HZ) of their host stars. However\, it takes more than orbiting the HZ for a given planet to be a relevant target for the search for exolife. Dr. Virginie Faramaz will talk about the best candidate systems\, and how the ‘debris disks’ beyond the HZ zone—in reservoirs analogous to the Solar System’s Kuiper Belt and Asteroid Belt—carry the seeds of life to the system’s innermost parts. Dr. Faramaz will explain how planets\, comets\, and dust grains are interconnected\, as well as the techniques and equipment used to get information on their components. \nBIO:  Dr. Virginie Faramaz is a global specialist on planets and debris disk interactions. In her own words\, she was “born and raised in Savoy in the French Alps\, where we are crazy over fondue\, raclette\, tartiflette\, and basically any dish that contains cheese\, ham and potatoes.” Her PhD centered on theoretical aspects of planet-debris disks interactions. She worked with data obtained at ALMA in Chile’s Atacama Desert\, and at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago\, Chile. In 2017\, she became an Exoplanet Science Initiative Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, and also worked with the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExSci) at Caltech in California. As an Assistant Research Professor at UA’s Steward Observatory\, she uses the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer to further her projects. Dr. Faramaz enjoys teaching science to a variety of audiences\, especially children. \nSpecial Note: The Raymond E. DESCRIPTION:Evening Under the Stars Observing at the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association (TAAA) Chiricahua Astronomy Complex. Want to stargaze from a dark site where the band of the Milky Way is clearly visible across the sky? You see so many stars it is hard to pick out the constellations. Twice per year\, we open our TAAA Chiricahua Astronomy Complex (Turkey Creek area near Chiricahua National Monument) to the public for an observing session. You can observe through a telescope with a 40″ mirror and see galaxies over 100 million light years away. We will have several large telescopes to observe with. \nOur Fall “Evening Under the Stars” will be Saturday October 29th 2022. The gate will be open at 5:30 pm with activities starting 6 pm and observing at 6:30 pm. Come join us for an exciting evening of astronomical observing. The site is about 90 minutes SE of Tucson near the Chiricahua National Monument. If you have friends/family that live in that area\, let them know. The event is weather dependent. White 21” telescope will be available to view through from 7 PM to 10:30 PM\, courtesy of Steward Observatory. \n6:30 pm – Main Presentation\nTITLE:  A Sky Full of Satellites\nPRESENTATION:  With the creation of new low Earth-orbit satellite mega-constellations (containing 100 or more satellites)\, astronomers face a new reality\, one with as many as 100\,000 bright satellites which can ruin astrophotographic images\, both scientific and aesthetic. While there are many concerns about the damage these constellations cause\, our speaker\, Harry Krantz\, is currently observing them primarily to measure their brightness and evaluate current and future mitigation goals. Based on his extensive surveys and investigation of their brightness and behavior\, Harry will inform us about the real impacts that astronomers can expect from satellite mega-constellations. \nBIO:  Harry Krantz is a PhD student of Astronomy at the University of Arizona Steward Observatory. His research focuses on observing and characterizing satellites and debris in Earth orbit. With a background in engineering and systems development\, Harry plays a key role in creating new instruments\, telescope systems\, and techniques to overcome the unique challenges in observing satellites. \n

DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm – Main Presentation\nTITLE:  The James Webb Space Telescope: observing from the Solar System to the Earliest Universe\nPRESENTATION:  This talk will describe the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)\, its instruments\, and what we have learned so far in its mission. The 10 billion dollar telescope\, now situated a million miles from Earth\, was launched on December 25\, 2021. With its sensitivity in the infrared spectrum\, (which can’t be seen by the human eye)\, it promises to reveal much valuable new information about the universe in which we live. Its first images\, released to the public on July 12\, 2022\, give a hint of what’s to come. SUMMARY:HYBRID – General Meeting – August 2022
DESCRIPTION:6:30 pm – Main Presentation\nTITLE:  Sun Daggers and Simple Noontime Sun Observations; From the Hohokam and Ptolemy to Kepler and Einstein\nPRESENTATION: All cultures have specialists and laypeople observing the Sun\, for purposes ranging from calendars (for planting and ritual days) and timekeeping\, to astronomy research (e.g.\, sunspot counts\, Earth’s orbit\, and the gravitational bending of light).  For TAAA\, Dr. Schaefer will share two sets of his research with naked-eye observations of the Sun from the Tucson area that are of interest to amateur astronomers\, professional astronomers\, and historians of astronomy. One set of research concerns the many sun daggers—dagger-shaped gaps in shadow created by sunlight steaming through crevices in rocks—etched onto rocks by the Hohokam Indians (c. 1000 AD) as markers for solstices and equinoxes for ritual purposes.  His research (with Jim Stamm) on sun daggers from spiral petroglyphs at Picture Rocks\, Signal Hill\, and Cerro Prieto prove the solstitial alignments were intentional.   \nAnother local observing program has been to accurately measure the Sun’s analemma; a diagram that shows the position of the Sun as viewed from a fixed position on Earth over the course of a year. With these observations for the Astronomical League Observing Award on the Analemma\, he can define Earth’s orbit\, and derive Tucson’s latitude\, the obliquity of the ecliptic\, the dates of solstice and equinox\, the eccentricity of the Earth’s orbit\, and the date of perihelion. This is a modern empirical test of the ancient Greek discoveries that led them to introduce epicycles. Dr. Schaefer’s modern data can also be used to test and prove the three Kepler Laws.  And all this\, he says\, is possible “by making quick naked-eye observations\, with simple and cheap equipment\, from my front yard.” \nBIO:  Dr. Bradley Schaefer received his Ph.D in 1983 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Louisiana State University. His wide range of interests include many areas of astrophysics\, as well as many aspects of astronomical events in history (e.g. the Crucifixion and the Star of Bethlehem) and in literature. For his work on the Supernova Cosmology Project which led to the discovery of dark energy and for which its leader\, Saul Perlmutter won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics\, Dr. Schaefer received a share of the 2007 Gruber Cosmology Prize\, and the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. \n7:15 pm – Seasonal Star Information\nPresented by Mary Turner.

DESCRIPTION:TITLE:  Space Domain Awareness for Sustainable Orbital Space \nPRESENTATION:  The orbital space around the Earth is congested\, contested and competitive. Over the last decade\, the number of operational satellites has increased >250% and the number of orbital debris has doubled. With the impending launch of commercial mega constellations\, the sustainable use of orbital space is questioned. As humans expand their footprint beyond near-Earth environment into cislunar space (between Earth and the moon)\, there is a critical need to detect\, track\, and characterize space objects not only for space traffic management but to avoid strategic surprises. Dr. Reddy’s talk will be a primer on space domain awareness\, including a synopsis of the current situation\, highlighting key challenges ahead and the application of planetary science techniques to resolve some of them.  \nBIO:  Dr. Vishnu Reddy is a planetary scientist and an infrared spectroscopist researching connections between asteroids and meteorites to understand Solar System formation and evolution. His research also focuses on space objects in cislunar space for the US Air Force. He received his doctorate from the University of North Dakota (UND) in Earth System Science and Policy (2009) and was a post-doctoral researcher at Observatório Nacional\, Brazil (2010). While a Research Assistant Professor at UND (2010-2013) he worked with the Max-Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany on NASA’s Dawn mission to asteroid (4) Vesta. He subsequently worked at the Planetary Science Institute (2013-2016) before moving to the University of Arizona (2016-present) where he is an Associate Professor in the Lunar and Planetary Lab. He served as the investigation team lead (2015-2020) on NASA’s Near-Earth Object Surveyor Mission to discover 90% of near-Earth objects (NEOs) larger than 140 meters. Currently\, as Director of UA’s Biosphere 2 Space Domain Awareness Observatory Complex\, he oversees all ground-based optical/infrared and passive radio frequency space surveillance assets. Asteroid 1981 EQ28 has been named (8068) vishnureddy by the International Astronomical Union in recognition of his contribution to planetary science.

SUMMARY:Grand Canyon Star Party
DESCRIPTION:Join Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association and the National Park Service for the 32nd annual Star Party. The Star Party will be June 18 – 25\, 2022. We average 50 telescopes for 8 nights. You will see Solar System planets\, Galaxies Far Far Away\, Star Clusters — some with several hundred thousand stars\, Nebulae\, multiple star systems (some with as many as 6 stars)\, and lots more. The skies are so dark you can clearly see the band of the Milky Way overhead. We start with a talk in the Visitor Center Auditorium about an astronomy topic at 8 pm. Observing at the telescopes goes from sunset (about 8 pm) to 11 pm. (This being our first hybrid meeting\, please be patient as we work out any technical kinks!)\n6:30 pm – Main Presentation\nTITLE:  Imaging Giant Planets Forming Around Young Stars \nPRESENTATION:  Giant planets form within the first few million years of a system’s lifetime. After formation\, these massive planets interact with their birth disks and gravitationally sculpt the environment of subsequent planet formation. Recent technical advances have enabled observations of the first few giant planets while they’re still forming and interacting with their parent disks. These planets induce large-scale structural changes in the disks alongside their on-going formation. And Dr. Kevin Wagner’s talk will highlight the first images of gas giant forming planetary systems. It will cover how these images are produced\, what goes into their interpretation\, and what they teach us about the formation of systems with giant planets (including our own solar system).  \nBIO:  Dr. Kevin Wagner is a NASA Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory. After growing up in Kentucky and Ohio\, Dr. Wagner studied at the University of Cincinnati before receiving his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on directly detecting and studying planets around nearby stars\, such as Alpha Centauri\, with a specific focus on finding and characterizing potentially life-supporting planets and understanding how planetary systems form and evolve.
